How to get a passport fast
There are three ways to speed things up. Which one works depends on how many days you have left.
1. Expedited service by mail or at a facility
Add the $60 expedite fee to your application and pay for 1–2 day return delivery. Processing takes about 2–3 weeks plus mailing. This is enough if your trip is at least a month away.
2. A passport agency appointment
If you travel within 14 days, you can book one of the 26 passport agencies. They can print a passport in days, sometimes the same day. The catch is that appointments are limited and you must travel to the agency in person.
3. A registered passport expediter
Private expediters are registered to submit applications at passport agencies for you. You still visit a local acceptance facility first if it's your first passport. They charge a service fee on top of the government fees, typically more for faster turnaround.
Which to choose
- 6+ weeksRoutine service is fine. Apply at an acceptance facility (first-time, child, lost passport) or renew by mail or online.
- 3–6 weeksPay the $60 expedite fee and choose 1–2 day return delivery.
- Under 14 daysYou qualify for a passport agency appointment, if you can get one, or use a registered expediter.
- Under 3 daysLife-or-death emergency involving immediate family: call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778.

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth paying a passport expediter?
It can be if your trip is within two weeks and you can't get an agency appointment, or the nearest agency is far away. If you have a month or more, the government's $60 expedited service is usually enough.
Can I upgrade a pending application to expedited?
Yes. Call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 to add expedited service to an application already in process.
